Steven Martin
Steven Martin

Vice President & Chief Digital Officer, GE

Steven Martin joined GE in October, 2016, as Vice President and Chief Digital Officer for GE.

With the goal of developing end-to-end software and cloud solutions to support GE customers’ digitization efforts, Steven is responsible for leading and advancing the business’s transversal digital industrial strategy. This includes the activation of product, service and solution roadmaps, and designing new customer experiences and business models.

Prior to joining GE, Steven spent fourteen years at Microsoft and was most recently the general manager and chief data scientist for Azure. In this role, Steven was responsible for global operations, customer acquisition and billing, analytics and data science, as well as the underlying data platform for services management. He was responsible for core business growth of over 100% year over year for five consecutive years. He also served as the chief data scientist for the Cloud and Enterprise Division.

Steven previously held several other roles at Microsoft with increasing responsibility, including General Manager of Business Planning and Strategy, Senior Director Business Operations, Server and Tools Division, the director of Product Management for Microsoft’s Platform Middleware, .NET and App Servers where he drove market share growth from 22% to over 70% and over $4 billion in revenue, and group product manager for E-Business.

Prior to Microsoft, Steven held product management and marketing roles with other tech-related businesses. Steven holds a BS in Behavioral Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and is an ongoing student of Behavioral Economics.
Jim Walsh

Chief Executive Officer-Software Solutions, GE

Jim Walsh is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Software Solutions at Grid Solutions, a business within GE. In this role, Jim leads a team of talented professionals focused on providing mission-critical information systems that help ensure reliable, efficient and safe delivery of electricity, water and fuels for utilities all over the world. This business serves the electrical Transmission & Distribution, Oil & Gas and Telecommunications segments across 120 countries and is a significant part of GE’s Digital Industrial strategy.

Jim’s career is marked by a long history of software experience and expertise. He joined GE in 2008 as GM, Global Professional Services for GE’s Intelligent Platforms Software and Services business, after spending 19 years with 3M in various software leadership roles. In 2011, Jim’s role was expanded to Global Business Leader overseeing automation, manufacturing and industrial data intelligence software along with global professional services. Jim was promoted to GM, Software and Services in August 2012. In 2014, he assumed the role of GM, Intelligent Platforms with responsibilities for all Global Commercial facets including Sales, Marketing and Services. In early 2015, Jim was promoted to President and General Manager of GE’s Intelligent Platforms Software business, leading Product Management, Technology, Services and Support for the Digital portfolio. Prior to taking his current role, Jim served as President and CEO of GE’s Automation and Controls business. Jim has played a key role in advancing GE’s software monitoring and analytics capabilities, and transforming the businesses he’s led into profitable and growing entities.

Jim attended the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and graduated with a B.S. degree in Finance. He resides in Charlottesville with his wife and two daughters.
Jonathan O’Sullivan
Jonathan O’Sullivan

Manager Innovation, EirGrid

Jonathan O’Sullivan has spent over 20 years working in the electricity industry in the planning, operation and markets design. In this time he has developed an acknowledged expertise in the theoretical modelling of the system, the necessary practical operation practices and the requirements for a well designed and functional market. In recent years Jonathan has been central to the implementation of the first electricity market in Ireland in 2000, the first all island market in 2007, the development of the “Delivering a Secure sustainable power system” (DS3) programme which will deliver the secure and reliable operation of the Ireland and Northern Ireland power system with unprecedented levels of wind electricity by 2020.

His current role in EirGrid, the transmission system operator in Ireland and Northern Ireland, is Manager Innovation. Through this Jonathan drives general innovation in the group as well as specific technology strategies which include DS3, distributed power flow control devices, solar and storage. To do this Jonathan’s team need to consider the future needs of the power system and envisage how these multiple technology strategies may interact at scale. These considerations require technical, economic and government policy considerations.

Jonathan is an active member of ENTSO-E, the European association of TSO, where he contributes to working groups and committees on innovation, research, markets and renewables, long term market design and TSO-DSO interaction.

Secretary General, ENTSO-E

Laurent Schmitt is ENTSO-E’s Secretary General since January 2017. Before joining ENTSO-E, he was Global Smart Grid Strategy Leader at General Electric Grid Solutions.

Laurent worked in Europe, the United States and Asia, first on power generation then on transmission and distribution specialising in smart grids solutions. Laurent is a member of strategic committees in CIGRE, IEC, EPRI and European Smart Cities Platform. He took part in expert task forces of the IEA and the European Commission.

Laurent is a French national. He graduated in Power System Engineering from Supélec in Paris and holds an Executive MBA from INSEAD, France.
Peter Hermans
Peter Hermans

Technology Officer (CTO), Stedin Netherlands

Peter has a strong background in telecommunications: he worked for 23 years in the telecom sector in the Netherlands in several executive IT management positions in the fixed, mobile and internet business.

Peter started in the Utility sector in 2007 where since then he is driving strategy and the initiation of business programs and roadmaps of the Dutch utility sector and DSO Stedin; programs related to the energy transition (market model developments, flexibility, unbundling), telecoms, smart meters & smart grids, (flexibility) and TSO-DSO data-management. He joined Stedin (DSO) in 2010.

Peter has participated in M490 activities of CENCENELEC/ETSI, is an active member of the EU taskforce smart grids (EG1 + EG3), and the TSO-DSO data-management platform, and a frequent speaker on international conferences.

Anthony joined GE in 2006; he is currently the Sr. Staff Digital Product Manager for Asset Performance Management. He has held multiple roles in GE Healthcare, GE Power & Water and GE Energy Services such as Director Product Management Software & eCommerce; Product Line Manager, Digital Catalog; Regional Commercial Manager, and Sales Quotation Manager, Industrial Solutions. He is a graduate of GE’s Junior Officer Leadership Program (JOLP). Prior to joining GE Anthony served 7 years as a Logistics Officer in the US Army and was stationed throughout the US, Korea and served in combat in Ramadi and Baghdad Iraq.

Anthony holds an MBA from Georgia State University, a B.S. in Transportation and Logistics Management from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Professional Certificate in Internet of Things, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Anthony enjoys weightlifting, golf, and cycling. He is married to Nadia Brock Faucette and has two children Kinsley & Aidan.

Bryan Friehauf is the Vice President – Digital Product Management for the Asset Management portfolio in GE’s Grid Solutions business. In this role he is responsible for leading the global business strategy and execution for the Asset Management product line. Bryan has 24 years experience in diverse positions throughout various industries from maintenance and engineering organizations to consulting businesses.

Bryan has also served as a Business Unit CIO at IBM and Xcel Energy, Inc. with responsibilities such as managing all IT products and services that support gas and electric trading, risk management and settlements businesses, corporate financial operations, human resources, and electric generation business units. In 2007, Bryan served as Vice President of Professional Services at Mincom, Inc. until early 2011 when he accepted his current position at GE Energy.

Bryan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Thomas Edison State University in Trenton, NJ. He resides in Denver, Colorado with his wife, Tracy their three daughters, two sons-in-law and two grandsons. He spends his free time enjoying outdoor activities with his family, including: hunting, fly fishing, archery, and camping.

She has participated for Iberdrola in R&D project INTELEC on access to the network through Internet. Control Systems & Automation Manager, UK Power Networks

John Duller is Control Systems and Automation Manager at UK Power Networks, having joined the electricity industry 32 years ago. He has wide experience in a variety of roles, including acting as Network Manager for the East of England and London electricity distribution networks. John managed the initial development and deployment of automation in London. In 2011 he set up a new team to manage the control, SCADA and automation systems for UK Power Networks. He delivered the London PowerOn Control System project, which was introduced in time for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2015 he completed the implementation and full deployment of algorithmic Adaptive Power Restoration System on the London Network, followed by the East of England and South East networks in 2016. In 2017 PowerOn Mobile was deployed and John is presently working on automating restoration following an EHV outage and moving the low voltage system to PowerOn.

In 2016, he accomplished SCADA/DMS/OMS project overall in TREDAS. At that year, he represented the company in World Energy Congress 2016 –WEC. Onur is a Young Professional member of IEEE. He was the section Ambassador in 2016. Now, he is the Regional Lead – R8 Europe 2017 to drive IEEE day. He has some interest in management, leadership, power engineering and artificial systems.

Gillian has worked in the Utility and Telecom OSS and BSS markets for over twenty years, both delivering integrated and automated solutions and also bringing products to market which underpin these solutions, working with the GE product suite.

During this time, Gillian has worked in the Realworld group twice first both as a CTO and now also the CEO of the UK company. Prior to this, Gillian worked in Business Development for Smallworld, founded the Telecoms group and established the current inventory product suite. During this time, Gillian represented Smallworld on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) global standards committee.

Gillian has also worked for Accenture, Cerillion, Ubisense and C.I.S on projects including automated service fulfilment, real-time solutions for financial and electricity domains, and large scale plant design. Her PhD is in Theoretical Physics.

Ethan served for 10 years as ADMS Marketing Product Manager and Business Development Director. Product Manager, EMS Platform Core Proucts

Previously led the development of the User Interfaces for Network Management Systems (NMS). As product development manager, serves as technical lead for the e-terravision product—a UI product specifically focusing on decision support systems and situational awareness for the NMS control room operator and analysts. The e-terravision product brings together information from multiple systems, such as the current system state, system state due to contingencies, wind forecasts, and lightning strikes. The elements are all brought into one consistent view to aid with system monitoring and issue mitigation and resolution.

Gennaro also led the development the AREVA Energy Trading Office, a strategic initiative to develop a comprehensive integration framework within which a trading organization can develop, manage, and, oversee their overall energy trading activities in the context of a deregulated and competitive energy industry. The suite of products for such a market, are based on distributed architecture (both two tier and three tier) and on current technologies such as web enabled GUIs, RDBMS, and WAN/LAN communication networks and UNIX and NT operating systems.

Dr. Kwok W. Cheung received his Ph.D. degree of Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. He joined GE (formerly CEGELEC ESCA) as a power system engineer developing on-line dynamic security assessment and energy management solutions in 1991. From 1995-2008, he held various technical lead and management positions responsible for the design and implementation of many leading energy and transmission markets worldwide including Transpower (New Zealand), Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), ISO New England, PJM, ERCOT and Midcontinent ISO. In 2008, he became the Director of Market Management Systems managing a worldwide R&D group to research, develop and maintain market management products and related smart grid solutions. Currently, he is the Director of Global Market Management Solutions of GE Grid Solutions responsible for managing the overall business and all products of markets.

Dr. Cheung has over twenty-six years of experience in the electric power industry. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Power & Energy Society, a registered Professional Engineer of the State of Washington, a certified Project Management Professional of PMI, and a Fellow of the IEEE.

Dr Avnaesh Jayantilal is Product Director for the Distribution and Grid Modernization product line in Grid Software Solutions assisting electric utilities in enhancing grid operations and reliability, safety, business process optimization and customer satisfaction. Dr. Jayantilal joined GE (then Alstom) in 1999, and prior to his current role he led the Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) product line focusing on enhancing distribution grid operations through improving efficiency, reliability and safety. He has also led the Market Management Systems (MMS) product line providing electricity market clearing and settlements solutions to Market Operators (RTO/ISO/TSO’s) Prior to that he has held positions in Product Marketing, Business Development, Project Engineering and Software Development. Dr. Jayantilal received his Masters and PhD degrees in Electrical Power Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), and his BEng degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from the Royal Military College of Science (Cranfield). He is also a Senior Member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES), in which he chairs the IEEE PES Distribution System Operations and Planning subcommittee.

Senior Solution Architect, GE Digital

Colin joined Smallworld in 1993 and is well known throughout the DACH market as a Technical Consultant for the Geospatial product portfolio. He has been involved in the Smallworld Customer based throughout Europe supporting the NRM Multi Utility and Office Solutions gaining a wide range of utilities market experience. He has held multiple roles within GE including NRM developer, System Architect, Technical Assistant to pre sales as well as his current Solution Architect role. Currently he is supporting the Utility Product Management with his insight to market requirements from the NRM market place.

Colin holds a B.Sc Surveying Science from Newcsatle University U.K. and has worked in the software industry since graduation for a survey software house in the UK as well as a Facilities Management software provider before moving to Germany in 1991 to join Smallworld and later GE.

Mehrdad Mesbah is a senior expert in Utility Communications with GE Grid Solutions, active in different aspects of this domain since 1984. He graduated in Electronic Engineering from Southampton University, UK and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications (now Telecom-Paristech) respectively in 1982 and 1984. He has actively contributed to CIGRE Study Committee on Telecommunications on different aspects of operational telecoms in electrical power utilities over the last 20 years leading international working bodies on operational telecom service delivery, telecom operation & maintenance and Protection Relay Communications, receiving the CIGRE Technical Award in 2008. Jean-Marc has over 25 years' experience in the development, delivery and support of Energy Management Systems, along with solid experience in the electricity Market Management System (MMS), Energy Telecom and Distribution Management System (DMS) fields. After this role Damien was promoted to lead Software Segment in EMEA, and more recently was the Regional Commercial Director for Software Solutions in EMEA. Prior to joining Digital Energy he was the UK Marketing and Services leader of GE Capital’s Equipment Services business. Before joining GE in 2002 Damien had a number of senior commercial roles in Nortel Networks, and BMW Group. Damien is a native of Kenilworth, Warwickshire. He holds an MBA from Leicester University and a BA in Geography from Leeds University.

James has been with GE 19 years. He joined Smallworld in 1998 – following completion of his doctorate, in GIS, at University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. During his time at GE, James has worked in both pre and post sales roles in the telecommunications business. He has been Telecoms Product Manager since 2002. In this role his primary responsibility is to work with the customer base, understand the market conditions and translate that into the product roadmap. James now holds the role Product Line Manager for Smallworld Telecoms, meaning he is responsible for all aspects of product management relating to the Smallworld telecoms software.
